The Social Studies Department offers a wide variety of courses designed to fulfill the New York State requirements and encourage student growth, leadership and citizenship.. Students study Global History and Geography I regents or honors in 9th grade and Global History and Geography II regents or honors or AP European History in 10th grade. In 11th grade, students can choose from United States History and Government regents, honors or AP United States History. In 12th grade, students can choose from Economics, AP Economics, Public Policy Issues or AP United States Government. An assortment of elective classes includes Introduction to Sociology, American Civil Law, Urban Studies – City Life, American History through Sports, and SJU Honors Sociology.
The goal of the St. John the Baptist DHS Social Studies Department is to develop students who understand democracy, the workings of our government, appreciate diversity, and have a solid foundation of research and critical thinking skills while meeting the needs of all students. Students should possess the necessary skills that would allow each to become productive citizens in, and contribute to our global society.
