Chromebook FAQ's
1. What is a Chromebook? What can it do?
A Chromebook is a “laptop” that runs on Google’s web-based Chrome operating system. It’s primary function is to allow students access to Apps for Education while in the building. While there is very limited storage space available, most documents and apps exist in the cloud when using a Chromebook.
2. Can we buy our own Chromebook instead of using the school issued Chromebook?
Unfortunately, no. All Chromebooks used in the classroom must be issued by St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School since Chromebooks will be logged into our network while in use. They have been configured to work on our network/domain.
3. Since you’re using Google Apps for Education will Google sell or share student information?
The information in Google Apps for Education is private and will not be shared or sold.
4. Can our student bring in a laptop instead of using the school issued Chromebook?
No. As in question #2, all devices used in the classroom need to be the St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School issued Chromebook to ensure safety and security.
5. Will students be expected to use the Chromebook for school-related activities only?
During the school day, Chromebooks will be used for school purposes in the classroom and students will be able to access any web based resource allowed through the school’s internet filter.
6. What happens if my student’s Chromebook gets stolen or damaged at school? Who will be responsible for that?
If the Chromebook is stolen or damaged, the student is responsible for the full cost of replacement or repairs. If your device is stolen, please report this to the library right away. Students should also report damaged devices to the library. The school will assist students in navigating the repair process.
7. Are the Chromebooks uniquely assigned to a specific student?
Yes. Each Chromebook has a unique asset tag that is assigned to a student.
8. Will my student be using the same Chromebook all 4 years at SJB?
Yes.
9. What happens if my student’s Chromebook is not working? Will he be given a loaner to use for class?
If the Chromebook is not working, the student needs to go to the library to report the problem. They will be issued a loaner device until the problem with their Chromebook is resolved.
10. Will there be charging stations at the school?
Charging stations will not be available at the school. The Chromebook has a battery capacity of 8 hours when fully charged. Students will need to routinely charge their Chromebooks overnight prior to coming to school the next day.
11. Will you be able to secure the internet connection when my student uses the Chromebook outside of school?
No. The school is unable to provide any filtering software when a student accesses internet connections outside of the school. Therefore, the students and their parents/guardians bear sole responsibility for exercising appropriate internet guidelines and for abiding by state and federal laws and regulations. The student’s use of the district issued Chromebook at home and outside of school, however, is subject to the school's Student Discipline Policy.
12. How will inappropriate use of the Chromebook be addressed?
Students using the school issued Chromebook in school and outside of school are expected to comply with the policies set forth in the schools Technology Plan. Parents and students are required to sign this plan before they are issued a Chromebook. Failure to comply with these policies will be cause for disciplinary action. The school is the sole decision-maker when deciding disciplinary consequences for inappropriate use of technology.
13. Will the school be able to see everything that my student does through the Chromebook?
Monitoring of student activities on the Chromebook can only occur when used in the school. Outside of school parents are highly encouraged to communicate their expectations and be cognizant of their student’s use of the Chromebook.
